Malt Madness is an American Homebrewers Association sanctioned competition and provides you an opportunity to have your homemade beer, cider, and mead evaluated by BJCP registered judges. Prizes and awards will be given for beers placing first, second, and third in each category, and for Best of Show. The 2015 revision of the BJCP guidelines will be used for this event. The competition will be held on Saturday, September 9th at the Gallows Hill Spirits. (directions are located below). Stewards should be there at 8:15AM. Judges should be there at 8:30AM.  We plan to announce the winners of Malt Madness and make presentations of awards after 5:00PM.  The exact time will depend on the number of entries and judges.  The actual competition is not open to spectators, but the awards ceremony will be.

Competition Guidelines and Entry Requirements

  • Malt Madness (beer/cider/mead) is open to all home brewers

  • All beers, ciders, or meads must be non-commercial in nature and produced at home.

  • All entries must be registered and paid online by clicking on the link below.

  • The entry fee is $7 per entry.

  • Each entrant is limited to ten (10) entries.

  • Although 12-ounce bottles are strongly preferred, entrants may submit two bottles ranging from 10- to 16-ounces in volume for each entry. Entrants proposing to submit one 750 ml bottle for meads or ciders must contact the Competition Organizer first.

  • Bottles may be brown or green glass, and must be free of any labels, etched logos, or other identifying marks.  Swing tops are acceptable.

  • Bottle caps must not be labeled with identifying marks. Any logos should be obscured.

  • A completed entry form must accompany each entry, recipes are optional. If entering more than one beer, make sure the correct entry form accompanies each entry.

  • A bottle ID form must be attached to each bottle with a rubber band. Only use the bottle label provided by the registration process! For the love of homebrew... please do not tape your entry forms to your bottles or your entries may be disqualified.

  • Categories and subcategories may be combined for judging purposes, however beers or meads will be judged according to the category/subcategory in which they are entered. The style guidelines for each category and subcategory are available below.

  • It is the responsibility of the brewer to decide and indicate on the entry form the appropriate category and sub-category for their entry.

  • Entries which do not meet these entry requirements may be disqualified.

  • Depending on the number of entries and category distribution, categories and subcategories may be combined or separated for judging and awards purposes.  These judging table breakdowns will not be available prior to the competition and will be determined by the competition committee once all entries have been processed.

  • Any disputes that arise before, during or after the competition will be settled by the competition committee.

  • As a courtesy to our out of state judges who may not live close to a drop off location, they may bring their entries the morning of the competition. Please be sure entries are registered by the deadline and arrive cold. And please let the organizers know that you will be hand carrying your entries.

  • All Stewards are requested to arrive by 8:15 AM.

  • All Judges are requested to arrive by 8:30 AM.

  • Results will be announced as soon as Best of Show results are in.

  • Brewer feedback is the primary purpose of Malt Madness. Your score sheets will be returned to you shortly after the contest. Please do not send an SASE with your entry.

Entry Fee:

$7 per entry

Entry Maximum:

The maximum number of entries accepted by Malt Madness will be 500 entries. The online registration window will automatically close once registration totals reach 500 or at midnight on August 25, 2017, whichever comes first.

Entry Deadlines:

Entries will be accepted from 8/11/17 through 8/24/17. Late entries will not be accepted.

Drop Off Locations:

Entries may be dropped off at the following locations. Hours of operation and any revisions to the entry deadlines for each location will be determined by the location, not the competition, so please check their website or call for details.

Mail In Entries:

Mail in Entries should be sent only to the Bethlehem Keystone Homebrew Supply location. This is the only location accepting mail in entries. Entries must be registered and paid for online and received in the store no later than August 25, 2017, even if mailed prior.
